Two stones. Two boards. A perfect fit. Inspired by British Columbia’s Twin Sister peaks, more commonly known as Lion’s Gate, Loewen Console is structured entirely by geometry, gravity, and quiet unity. It is as robust and stable as it is elemental. Designed to define space quietly, it can be cut to almost any length. Options include a range of stone and wood selections, as well as matched stone bookends.
Features:
• Cable Hiding Channel
• Fits LPs
• Custom Length
• A variety of wood and stone combinations.
Loewen Console suits a wide range of domestic and commercial settings and can span from three to nearly twelve feet. It works especially well in open spaces that call for an elegant touch. Books, sculptures, flower arrangements, and other artefacts all find pride of place on Loewen Console. It also serves music enthusiasts well. Its weight and stability make it an ideal support for a turntable. Its lower shelf fits LPs exactly, and a hidden cable channel allows high-end electronics to be displayed without the unsightly presence of wires.
The structural integrity of Loewen Console arises from form, material, and gravity. The vertical stone pieces take the form of asymmetrical pyramids. The wood planks are cut precisely to receive the stones at specific depths. The weight of the wood and the rigidity of the stone create an extremely strong mechanical connection that resists movement in all directions.
Stone is commonly finished through techniques such as flaming, leathering, and polishing, all of which produce relatively imprecise surface dimensions. Achieving this geometric interlock required a different approach. Mill Rustication is a technique invented for this piece to deliver precision and regularity while creating a distinct surface quality. It controls the step-over process of the stone-cutting mill to precise, repeatable dimensions. Once lightly sanded, the tool marks create a corduroy-like texture that is both pleasantly tactile and reliably precise.
Every aspect of Loewen Console, including material, form, and manufacturing technique, is integral to its function and beauty. The stone shape is both structural and gestural. Its slope directs the eye outward and extends the piece’s horizontality. The wood is as plain and direct as possible, dimensioned to the precise requirements of structure and use. Form does not follow function, nor does function follow form. Form, function, and material are one expression.
